Men are more likely to put on extra pounds around the waist, according to MayoClinic.com. Carrying around belly fat increases the risk of developing heart conditions, stroke, diabetes, some forms of cancer and insulin resistance. While you can't force your husband to lose weight, you can set a healthy example and support him in his efforts. By joining your husband in developing new lifestyle habits, you'll encourage him to shed the excess pounds while improving your health and the health of your family.

Step 1

Communicate your concerns honestly and openly to your husband. Mark Goulston, M.D., couples psychotherapist and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, suggests approaching the subject with conviction by letting your husband know how his weight and lack of concern for his health makes you feel.

Step 2

Set an example, especially if you have room to improve your own fitness level. Even if your husband isn't ready to acknowledge or act on his weight problem, he may be inspired by your progress, says Weight Watchers.

Step 3

Avoid eating fatty, sugary and processed foods in front of your husband, especially after he has made the decision to change his eating habits. Prepare and eat healthy meals together.

Step 4

Invest in a couple's pass at a gym. The American Council on Exercise recommends getting at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise most days of the week.

Step 5

Encourage your husband to talk to you about his frustrations or emotions involving his weight or health. Listen, and create a supportive environment where he feels comfortable talking to you about successes and failures alike.
