Remedies for Toothache Pain

Toothaches and pains can be caused by a variety of reasons, from a root infection to an abscess. Though visiting a dentist is recommended, it may not always be an available option. Relieving tooth pain can be done using a variety of home remedies. Items used are commonly found in the home or are available at your local grocery store.

Raw Vegetables and Ginger

Slice a cucumber or potato into a small shape that can sit next to the tooth. Make sure the vegetable is cold for extra relief. Ginger also works well--shave the ginger root into a small shape and place directly on painful area.

Peppermint and Saltwater Rinse

Place a small wad of dried peppermint leaves in the mouth. The peppermint will help with toothache pain. Occasionally flush mouth with a saltwater gargle. Place 1 tbsp. salt in water and mix well. Rinse mouth with solution and spit.

Vanilla Extract

Place vanilla extract on a cotton ball. Place the cotton ball in your mouth or wipe against tooth. For severe dental pain, swish your mouth with vanilla extract. The vanilla extract will numb the toothache.

Baking Soda Rinse

Place 2 tbsp. baking soda in one glass of water. Mix well. Swish in mouth and spit. Repeat until mixture is gone. Repeat as necessary.

Hot Washcloth

Apply the corner of a hot washcloth to the painful area. Rinse the washcloth and repeat as necessary. The heat of the washcloth will ease the pain temporarily.

Clove Pack

Take a pinch of cloves from a spice jar. Place in the corner of your mouth closest to the infected tooth. Allow the clove to soften by soaking in saliva. Chew on the cloves gradually to extract the numbing oils found in cloves. Continue to chew on cloves for about 30 minutes.

Take a Pain Reliever

Ibuprofen, approximately 200 mg every 4 hours, will relieve toothache pain. The anti-inflammatory drug will reduce pain and swelling. Always take medication with food or a glass of milk to decrease risk of stomach ulcers.
