Best Way to Straighten Your Hair

One of the best and easiest ways to straighten hair is by using a flat iron. The iron has a tong-like appearance and holds two flat, heated bars. Hair is clamped by the iron and straightened. The time it takes to straighten hair depends on the thickness, length and amount of curl present. You can straighten short hair in approximately 15 minutes, while extremely thick or long hair may take two hours.

Step 1

Shampoo, condition and dry your hair. The hair must be fully dry, and not damp to touch.

Step 2

Apply a straightening product to the hair. Look for styling products that promote straight hair. Products will commonly be lightly sprayed onto hair before using a flat iron.

Step 3

Turn on the hot iron and set it to the desired heat. The hotter the iron, the straighter the hair will be. Very curly and thick hair should use high heat settings.

Step 4

Clip your hair into several sections, beginning with the base of the scalp. You will probably need between five and 10 clips. Leave the very bottom portion of your hair loose.

Step 5

Begin with the bottom section of hair. Clamp the hair in the flat iron in 1- to 2-inch-wide sections, near the scalp. Slowly slide the hot iron down the hair section. Allow the section to cool, and repeat, if necessary. Spritz with hairspray for additional hold. Continue to straighten hair, unclasping and releasing sections, as necessary.

Step 6

Use a wide-tooth comb to style hair. Apply a light mist of hairspray for additional hold. Your hair will remain straight unless environmental conditions are humid or your hair becomes wet.
