Facial swelling occurs when a build-up of fluid is present in the tissue of the face, according to Medline Plus. Swelling can also affect the neck, legs and arms. When facial swelling is only a mild condition, it may be hard to see. A number of home remedies are available to help reduce facial swelling. None of their claims are supported through scientific evidence.
Witch Hazel
Natural Health magazine says that using witch hazel can help reduce swelling on the face. Witch hazel contains astringent and hemostatic properties, making it a beneficial treatment for promoting healthy skin and helping treat skin conditions such as eczema. Natural Health recommends taking a cotton ball and soaking it with witch hazel, then applying it directly the face and gently massaging the affected area. Wash your face after using witch hazel so the skin does not dry out. Do this about two times per week
Dandelion
According to Medline Plus, the dandelion is a member of the Asteraceae/Compositae family and is used as traditional medicine in North America. The dandelion contains anti-inflammatory properties, which can help the face and skin. Medline Plus says that there is not enough evidence conducted through human studies to support this claim, but laboratory reports on animals have found that the dandelion root may have anti-inflammatory properties.
Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo biloba is one of the most used herbs in traditional medicine and is among the best-selling herbal supplement in the United States, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Natural Health says that this herb can be used to help treat facial swelling that is a result of inflammation or skin infection. It is recommended that an individual suffering from facial swelling should take this herb in any available form such as tablets or liquid extracts at least once per week. Before taking any herb, ensure that a health-care professional has given his approval since herbs can interact with other medications.
