AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid and commonly contains glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The ingredients are used alone or in combination for anti-aging and wrinkle treatments. AHAs have been on the market to consumers since 1992. Most major beauty and cosmetic lines have product that contains AHA in the form of lotions, creams and skin peels.
Uses
AHAs decrease the amount of skin cells that are shed and may increase collagen and skin elasticity, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Fine lines and wrinkles may be diminished. The overall tone and color of the skin may become more even. Products containing AHAs are commonly used on the face and neck areas.
Product Definition
To be a cosmetic product, according to the 1938 Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, cosmetics are recognized as "articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body or any part thereof for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance." Because AHAs actually penetrate the skin and change the skin's condition on a cellular level, there has been some debate and concern on the regulation of products containing AHAs, according to the FDA. Currently AHAs are categorized as cosmeceutical by many in the cosmetics industry, though this term is not recognized by the FDA.
Concentration
Over-the-counter treatments including contain between 2 and 10 percent of AHAs. When visiting a cosmetician or day spa, the AHAs may contain between 20 and 30 percent of acid. Medical doctors such as dermatologists are able to use the strongest strength available, commonly as high as 70 percent.
Side Effects
A concern when using AHAs is that skin may become more sensitive. It is advised to use caution after treating skin with AHAs and always wear adequate sun block. An increase in skin cancer can result without added protection. Additional side effects include dry, itchy skin and scarring.
