Trying to lose weight can be challenging, but being in a group environment with others struggling with weight loss and who want to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle is often what it takes to make this commitment. Boot camps are developed in a supportive teamwork environment and professional instructors act as mentors and role models, pushing you to your full potential. There are many boot camps to choose from throughout California, from the coastal areas of San Diego to northern California.
Benefits and Focus
Boot camps incorporate many different styles of fitness activities. These styles are developed into group programs and focus on many areas, including strength training, cardio health and weight loss and nutrition education. These classes increase confidence through whole body awareness, increased energy, lowered stress levels and improvement in appearance.
Day and Extended Camps
Boot camps can be experienced in day programs throughout the state as well as extended camps where you will stay for one to two weeks. You can take part in extended programs at Wellspring Camps in Southern California in the Joshua Tree region or through Live In Fitness in Marina Del Rey. These extended programs include meal plans, private rooms and pool and spa accommodations. Others, such as the Tri Valley Boot Camp in Northern California, offer a four-week day program that holds one hour classes in the mornings and evenings.
Healthy Eating
Participants can expect to lose 3 to 10 percent body fat and from four to 15 pounds at boot camps. Part of boot camp is nutrition counseling, where you will have a customized nutrition and meal plan completed for you. Camp Technique in Marina Del Rey believes in the philosophy of five small meals a day and a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats. Other camps will strictly focus on the exercise portion and less on food intake, but will provide recommendations for nutrition information.
Exercise Program
Boot camps are designed for any fitness level and no one gets left behind. The camaraderie at such camps could be a prime motivator in improving your lifestyle. Your typical day may include trail hikes, water aerobics, strength training, jumping rope, Pilates, sport yoga and circuit training.
Equipment
You won't need much equipment, other than a water bottle, workout mat and running shoes designed for stability and cushioning. Be sure to wear proper workout clothes such as tech gear---designed to wick away moisture so you are not wearing clothes that are soaked in perspiration. Check with the program guide for any other equipment needed such as tennis or cycling gear.
