According to Medline Plus, skin tags are benign growths that commonly appear in individuals after they have reached middle age. The growth sticks out slightly from the skin and may have a narrow stalk connecting it to the skin's surface. Common areas where skin tags occur are the neck, underarms, chest and folds of the body. Before you treat the skin tag naturally at home, speak to your doctor to confirm that the growth is benign.
Step 1
Cleanse the area of the skin with a mild soap. Pat the skin dry with a towel.
Step 2
Tie a piece of thread around the base of the skin tag. According to the People's Pharmacy, the thread should be wrapped tightly around the base of the skin tag and secured with a knot. You may feel a slight stinging sensation at first that fades quickly. Any excess on the ends of the thread can be snipped off with a pair of nail scissors. If you are unable to maneuver the thread successfully on your own, ask someone for assistance.
Step 3
Wait several days. After waiting approximately three to four days, you should notice that the skin tag has blackened. Since the blood supply has been cut off, it will naturally fall off the body. Clean the area again after the tag has fallen off.
Tips and Warnings
- As an alternative, a liquid bandage can be applied to the skin tag. After several days, the skin tag should shrivel up and fall off naturally. Since skin tags are a cosmetic concern, medical procedures used to remove them will not typically be covered by insurance. Possible dermatological procedures done to get rid of skin tags include cryotherapy, cautery and surgical excision.
- Do not cut off skin tags to remove them at home. This may cause bleeding and increase your chance of infection.
