Stretch marks have been giving women and men, both young and old, grief for ages. These marks stretch across the thighs, abdomens, arms and backsides of many people. The marks are the result of periods of rapid growth, and they show up when the skin starts to stretch beyond its normal capacity. This can be from puberty, pregnancy or even weight lifting. When skin stretches too much, it is more difficult for it to produce the collagen that provides elasticity. Although they can be embarrassing, there are ways to learn to live with them.
Step 1
Cover them up. A little bit of make-up goes a long way toward camouflaging stretch marks that are found on visible areas of the skin. A light coating of concealer or foundation can hide those unsightly marks while in public. Look for a water-proof product if it is very hot or when you are planning to spend time in water. Another product for covering stretch marks is sunless tanning spray or cream. Regular tanning will not provide the same results because stretch marks are unlikely to tan from sun exposure or tanning beds.
Step 2
Stay toned. A toned body is less likely to show stretch marks as prominently as a body with looser skin. Keeping the body in shape is a way to prevent stretch marks from occurring, but once they are there, it also is a way to make them less noticeable. Medical News Today says daily exercise is a method for toning the skin and increasing skin's elasticity.
Step 3
Reduce their appearance. There are many creams sold over the counter that claim to heal stretch marks. The Mayo Clinic says that these creams will not get rid of stretch marks completely but that keeping the skin moisturized and hydrated may make them a little less noticeable. This includes drinking plenty of water to hydrate from within. Moisturizing creams and oils will provide hydration from the outside.
Step 4
See the dermatologist. For the most stubborn stretch marks, a dermatologist can help. There are prescription creams and laser therapy that can help with the most difficult cases. Both prescription creams and lasers work by stimulating collagen production, which helps stretch marks become more like the normal skin surrounding them.
Step 5
Realize that time fades stretch marks. Stretch marks do not have to last forever. Over time, they fade from bright-colored streaks to silvery marks. Leading a healthy life with a balanced diet and exercise will aid the body's ability to make collagen. Foster a healthy body image by living and eating as well as possible. Be patient, and those stretch marks will disappear before you know it.
Tips and Warnings

- Stretch marks can also be caused by certain diseases. If stretch marks appear without weight gain or pregnancy, or if they are found all over the body, see a physician.
