Surrounded by 400 miles of coastline, Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States. Visitors come to enjoy its white sand beaches dotted with isolated lighthouses and to explore Providence, a college town with a vibrant urban scene, or Newport, a quaint historical seaside town. While the state offers plenty of opportunities to engage in outdoor exercise during the summer months, there are no shortages of quality fitness clubs to turn to if the weather becomes dreary during your stay.
Clubs With Wellness Centers
With over 800 group exercise classes, free weight room, an indoor/outdoor heated pool, racquetball, basketball, volleyball courts and over 50 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, Newport Athletic Club has been voted one of the best places to work out by "Newport Life Magazine." This large club has a wellness center that offers services such as chiropractic care, massage therapy, nutritional counseling from a licensed dietitian, sunless tanning and more.
Sports Training Programs
Next Level Fitness offers strength and conditioning programs for athletes of all levels. Designed and taught by experienced coaches, the classes include speed and conditioning training as well as sports specific training. But you don't need to be an athlete to enjoy the club's facilities that include group exercise classes for all levels, personal training and exercise machines. Other specialty programs offered include pre-rehab training, everyday mobility and corrective training. Athletic Conditioning Center and Barrington Fitness Studio also offer sports training programs for athletes.
Tennis
Forecourt Complete Racquet and Fitness Club offers court sports facilities for racquetball, wallyball, volleyball and tennis. Play tennis as part of an adult league, or take advantage of the club's tennis clinics and lessons to improve your serves. The club also has a plethora of group fitness classes that range from indoor cycling and step aerobics to ballroom dancing and cardio tennis. For senior citizens, there is a senior program that offers individualized fitness programs and monthly lunch socials.
Heated Yoga Classes
Riverbend Athletic Club is one of the few fitness clubs in the state that offers heated yoga classes. Aside from heated yoga, group exercise lovers can choose from more than 40 aerobics and yoga classes per week, and 15 indoor cycling classes. Facilities include three weight rooms, 39 cardio machines, personal training and a racquetball and squash court. Tanning beds and massage therapy are also available on-site. Those newer to using gym equipment can take advantage of the club's two free equipment orientation classes that are available for new members.
For Women
Located in Cranston, Body Complete Fitness is a women's only fitness club that offers a workout room and lots of fun group exercise classes for all levels, such as Bootcamp Crazy, Party Sculpt and Pilates Core Fusion. Other services include weight loss challenge programs, physical therapy and private and group training sessions.
Although not exclusively a women's only gym, American Health Fitness Center offers a private gym for female members. Work out on the center's three strength-training floors or join a group fitness class in the spacious aerobics studio. Aside from the more common yoga, pilates and step aerobics classes, the studio offers innovative group exercise classes such as Zumba Rebounding, and its signature Core Pole Class. Members also have access to a walking/running track, pool, king size whirlpool and personal training.
