For many individuals, tanning is more than simply lounging in the sun; it is a way to unwind while gaining a more attractive appearance. A bronzed color can give a healthy glow to the skin, and some may find it especially becoming in bikini season. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, however, a tan actually means the skin has been injured and develops when the skin produces more melatonin to protect itself. Those weighing natural sun against tanning beds may want to consider three factors: safety, convenience and cost.
Safety
While some individuals maintain tanning beds are safer alternatives to natural sun tanning, melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is a danger whether you are soaking in the sun or simmering on a sunless tanning bed. According to the National Women's Health Resource Center, tanning beds typically use more UVA rays than UVB rays. Although UVA rays are milder, the wavelengths are longer, and they penetrate deeper through the skin's layers. In addition, UVA rays contribute to wrinkling the skin, as well as to the development of skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology notes there is no safe UV ray, and the American Cancer Society offers information that indicates tanning beds are equally dangerous when compared to natural sunlight.
Convenience
Many individuals, though aware of the risks of ultra violet rays, choose to sun bathe anyway. If the goal is a golden glow, then a tanning bed may be the best option. Tanning beds may not only provide a speedy means to become sun tanned, they can also be more convenient. Unlike natural sun tanning, tanning in a salon offers rays that are ready whenever you are, not just while the sun shines. Many fitness centers offer tanning with memberships and may be open well after dark (even 24 hours, in some cases). These tanning beds are also private, which may appeal to modest tanners.
Cost
The last factor that can weigh in on the decision to tan under natural sunlight or artificial rays is cost. Tanning beds may be more convenient; however, frequent trips can be costly. If cost is a factor, consider purchasing a lawn chair and settling for the sun in your backyard instead.
