SMS is a cell phone acronym that stands for "Short Message Service." SMS is better known as "text messaging" and is the vehicle by which text messages are sent to cell phones. Sending a text message can be a quicker way to get short bits of information out to cell phone users. This method is used as an alternative to the traditional phone call. There are several ways you can send SMS messages to a cell phone, provided you know the recipient's cell phone number.
Via a Cell phone
Step 1
Access the SMS function on your cell phone with SMS access. This function can most likely be accessed through your phone's menu button.
Step 2
Select the option for new text or SMS message. Place the cursor on the screen in the "To:" field. Many text message displays look like an e-mail message.
Step 3
Type in the recipient's cell phone number using the cell phone key pad. Use the directional buttons on the cell phone to place the cursor into the message portion of the SMS.
Step 4
Type the message using the phone's keypad. Select the "Send" command from the cell phone messaging menu. Some phones will have a specialized command button for sending a text message.
Via the Web
Step 1
Open your web browser. Click into the address bar with the mouse to place the cursor there. Type "sendsmsnow.com".
Step 2
Click on the "register" button on the left hand side of the home page to enter the registration area. Type the information the website requests in the boxes provided. Click on the "register" button to register your account.
Step 3
Click on the pull down menu at the top of the page and select the country of the recipient. Click into the box directly below the pull down menu and type the recipient's phone number. Place the cursor into the message portion and type your message. Click the "Send SMS" button to send your message.
Via E-mail
Step 1
Open up your e-mail client. Start a new e-mail message. You will be sending an e-mail to the recipient's cell phone so you will need to know in advance which carrier they use.
Step 2
Click into the "To:" field of the new e-mail. You will need to place an e-mail address in this field. To send a text message, you need to type "XXXXXXXXXX@SMScarrier.com" where the X's are the recipient's phone number and the "SMScarrier" is the messaging service for the recipient's phone service.
For example, if you were sending to a friend on the Sprint network, you should send the message to "1234567890@messaging.sprintpcs.com." The list of e-mail domains is located in on the SMS411 page in the resource section.
Step 3
Click into the message portion of the e-mail. Type the message you want to send to the recipient.
Step 4
Click on the "send" button to send the e-mail. The SMS will show from your e-mail address as opposed to a phone number on the recipient's phone.
Tips and Warnings
- Many cell phones allow users to send the same text message to multiple recipients at the same time. This allows users to get the word out about an event or some sort of happening quickly and efficiently.
- When e-mailing, you may only use a certain number of characters. An e-mail SMS message is able to include between 140 and 160 characters.
