Purchasing golf clubs is not something a golfer should enter into without some serious thought. Years ago, you might have picked out the brand of clubs your favorite pro golfer played with on television or perhaps you chose the same type of clubs your father used. It's a much more involved process. Golfers and professional golf fitters take height and arm measurements, measure swing speed, launch angle and also factor in average score and how long a player has been at the game before a purchase is made.
Step 1
Measure the player's height and the distance from the player's wrist to the ground when fitting clubs. These factors will give the fitter and the golfer the best determination on how long the clubs should be.
Step 2
Step into the golf simulator and take four swings with your woods and four with your irons. The golf simulator will provide measurements on swing speed, launch angle and lie angle. Once the golf fitter has these measurements, your golf clubs can be tailored to your specifications.
Step 3
Provide your golf history. Tell the fitter how long you have been playing the game, your handicap and the particulars of your game. Let him know if you perceive if you are a long hitter or you need more distance and describe your accuracy as well. This will help the club fitter determine what type of shaft--stiff or flexible--is needed for your game.
Step 4
Swing the clubs the fitter recommends before you purchase them. While the fitter's measurements will assure the clubs are correct for your size and the particulars of your game, they still have to feel comfortable when you swing them. Only you can determine that and you must swing them to decide if they are right for you.
Tips and Warnings
- Many golfers feel if they make an investment in new clubs they cannot afford custom fitting. However, custom-fitted golf clubs cost about $150 more than a standard set as of 2010.
