The main thing that sets the MIO Alpha apart from other high-quality heart rate monitors is the absence of a chest strap. Instead of having to wear both a wristwatch and a sweaty, slipping strap just under the bra line, the exerciser only wears the watch. The manufacturer claims 99 percent accuracy, even when running at speeds of 14 mph.

Useful Fitness Tool

Swimmers and others who love water sports will appreciate the MIO’s waterproof face. You can connect the MIO to smart devices to combine its heart rate measures with apps that monitor pacing, calories burned and GPS routing. Set it for a certain heart range and it will beep to let you know if you’re working too hard or not hard enough. However, as one of the more expensive heart rate monitors on the market, it’s appropriate for people who are serious about tracking their heart rate. It also might be too large for people with petite wrists.
