Wilmington, NC, is a city rooted in history and culture. The city sits on the beautiful Cape Fear River and is just off the North Carolina coast. From its downtown shops, cafes and entertainment venues to its short distance to the beaches, Wilmington is a great vacation destination. If you're planning a camping trip to the area, there are many sites from which to choose.

Geography

Wilmington, at about 200 square miles, is the largest city on the coast of North Carolina. With a river and the Atlantic Ocean nearby, the area is supported by tourism and industry. The historic riverfront area is a good place to shop, dine and enjoy the sites. With the neighboring beach towns of Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, you'll find everything the ocean has to offer. The climate is one of the main reasons people live and vacation in Wilmington. During the summer, the air is warm and humid, with average temperatures in the upper 80s. This is the perfect time of year for water activities. In the fall, the air is slightly cool, which makes it a great time to fish, shop or take in the scenery. By winter, it can get chilly, but the area's beauty remains. Visitors may, on occasion, even experience a slight snowfall in the area, with temperatures dipping into the 30s.

There are restrooms and shower facilities as well as free programs provided throughout the year. The park has a scenic natural habitat for hiking, fishing and boating and is just a few minutes from the shores of Carolina Beach.

Activities

During the summer, there is a beach music festival and fishing tournament at the beaches. You can also take part in the usual swimming, sandcastle building, fishing and surfing. Just a few miles south, you can experience marine life up close at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher in Kure Beach. In the beach and river areas surrounding Wilmington, you will also find horse-drawn carriage rides, boating, canoeing, golfing and much more.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to camp and visit the Wilmington beaches would be anytime between late spring and early autumn, when the temperatures are warm. To enjoy sunbathing, swimming and other water activities, plan your stay during the warmer months of the year.
