One common mistake among gym-goers is attempting to spot-reduce fat. Constantly working your abs by performing endless crunches is not the way to lose stomach fat. Indeed, there is no way to lose fat in just one area of your body. Decreasing your total body-fat percentage through exercise and a healthy diet will help to trim your waist quickly.

Step 1

Perform strength training three days per week. Break up your workouts into an upper-body day, a lower-body day and abs. Include 20 to 30 minutes of slow, steady-state cardiovascular exercise after each weight-training session to burn off stored fat.

Step 2

Train your abdominal muscles once per week. Perform exercises that work all of the muscles in the abdominal area, like crunches, leg raises, oblique crunches and push-ups, aiming for four sets of 20 to 30 repetitions each.

Step 3

Stay away from frozen dinners and pre-packaged foods. Eating foods that have been processed cause bloating and weight gain because of their high sodium content.

Step 4

Eliminate empty calories from your diet. Sugary sodas and contain 300 calories per can. Flavoring your coffee with one tablespoon of sugar and cream adds 100 calories per cup. Alcoholic beverages like a cranberry juice and vodka add 230 calories per drink. Empty calories each day add up to pounds per week, and sabotage your weight-loss efforts.

Step 5

Drink lots of water to eliminate bloating caused by dehydration. Aim for one gallon per day.
