Rainy season in San Francisco happens during what much of the rest of the country calls winter. From November to March, San Francisco gets regular rainy days. Staying active indoors in one of the country's great outdoor cities is easy, though. There are numerous interesting options for healthy indoor fun and activity.
Hit a Gym
San Francisco is home to many commercial health club chains, including 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox, Gold's Gym and Crunch. There are nine YMCA locations in San Francisco. For lesser known gyms, try the Jewish Community Center or the San Francisco Athletic Club. Some locations offer daily, weekly, hotel and short-term rates.
See a Museum or Two
For a long indoor walk with constant conversation starters, take a day at one or more of San Francisco's many museums. In the downtown area you will find SFMOMA, the Contemporary Jewish Museum and the Asian Art Museum. In Golden Gate Park you can take in the California Academy of Sciences and the DeYoung Museum of Art, located just a quick run through the raindrops from each other. On the coastline you can find the Legion of Honor, made famous in the Hitchcock film "Vertigo."
Climb a Wall
For climbers looking to stay in shape during the rainy season, try the climbing wall at Touchstone Climbing in the Mission. If you take a quick car or train ride across the bay, you will find more climbing walls in the nearby East Bay, such as Berkeley Iron Works, Planet Granite in Belmont or Marmot Mountain Works.
Stertch on a Mat
There are at least 20 different yoga schools in the city of San Francisco offering all levels and types of yoga instruction. There are almost as many Pilates classes offered each day as well. Check with local gyms to find classes at a commercial gym, or find a private yoga or Pilates teacher to keep fit during rainy season.
Get Wet Indoors
In San Francisco you can find some great pools to get in an indoor, aquatic workout. The University of San Francisco's Koret Recreation Center is home to an Olympic-sizes pool open to non-members on a daily basis. The Embarcadero YMCA offers month-to-month memberships for access to its pools and swim classes. The Herbst Natatorium offers classes and open swims on a regular basis.
Dance up a Sweat
San Francisco is a diverse city with many different populations all within the seven square miles of the city. Whether you are an expert ballroom or tango dancer or like to find the latest trance DJ, it's in San Francisco. You can work up a nighttime sweat in clubs in the Castro, the Mission District and SOMA (South of Market) neighborhoods. Check local free weekly newspapers for the best place to move on any given night.
