Treadmill Incline Repair

Modern treadmill models come with an incline feature, which allows you to change the angle of the walking belt to adjust the difficulty of the workout. The device accomplishes this through a dedicated motor, which raises or lowers the upper end of the treadmill's deck.

Setup

The simplest way to repair a treadmill with a broken incline motor is to install a replacement component. You can find these available at online retailers that specialize in selling fitness equipment parts. Get a motor designed to work with your model of treadmill, as each device may have its own set of requirements.

Although treadmills vary in design, in most cases the incline motor is located in the base of the treadmill, near the motor that drives the treadmill's belt. Flip the power switch or circuit breaker located at the base of the treadmill near the power cord, then disconnect the cord from its electrical outlet. Remove the plastic housings covering this portion of the device.

Access

The housing will be secured to the frame via bolts or screws, for which you'll need a Phillips screwdriver, Allen wrench or power drill. Remove the fasteners from the upper section of the housing, then lift that section free of the base; this may provide you with enough access to perform your repairs, but you may also find it necessary to turn the treadmill on its side and remove the bottom housing as well.

Replacement

Once you've gained access to the treadmill's internal components, you will likely have to detach the treadmill's deck before you will be able to get to the incline motor. Use an Allen key to turn the two bolts located at the rear of the treadmill's deck; this will loosen the belt, which will help later on. Remove the bolts securing the deck's end caps, then pry the side shields free of the base. Remove the bolts securing the rollers to the frame and disconnect the drive belt from the rollers.

You will find the incline motor bolted to the treadmill's frame; disconnect the cable leading from the motor to the console unit, then remove the bolts securing the motor in place. Install your replacement motor and connect the new motor to the console. Once you've installed the motor, reattach the treadmill's deck, reconnect the drive belt, tighten the walking belt and replace the motor housing.
