Repair of a Nordic Track Treadmill

NordicTrack treadmills come in a variety of models, and all share a basic design: A console unit attached to a pair of uprights controls the speed and angle of the device's walking belt. These components may cease to function properly over time. Learning how to perform a few basic repair procedures may help you to restore the device to working order.

Preparation

Before you do any work on your NordicTrack treadmill, turn off the device and disconnect its power cord, to minimize the risk of accidental injury. If you plan to work on the components inside the device's motor housing, you may wish to lower the deck's incline level to the lowest setting first. You will also need to gather the necessary tools for the type of repair you are planning to perform. In most cases, a Phillips screwdriver and an Allen wrench will be sufficient; additional items, such as silicone lubricant and replacement parts, may also be required.

Console Problems

The console unit on the treadmill is connected to the deck via a wire harness that runs through one of the uprights. If the console is not operating properly, remove the screws securing the device in place and lift it upwards; check the connections to confirm that the everything is properly seated. Next, remove the motor housing and check that the harness is properly connected to the deck motor and incline motor.

Walking Belt

The treadmill's deck consists of a walking belt wrapped around a platform with rollers installed at each end. Over time, the belt may shift out of alignment, affecting its ability to move over the rollers properly.

At the rear end of the treadmill's deck, you will find two bolts set into the ends of each of the side rails; turning these bolts will shift the belt's location on the deck. Turn the bolts in quarter-turn increments, and switch from one bolt to the other after you've made three quarter-turns in a row. Once you think you've aligned the belt, reactivate the treadmill and inspect the belt as it turns; if it still appears out of alignment, you will need to make more adjustments.

Keep the treadmill's deck lubricated to ensure that the belt is able to move smoothly. Use the adjustment bolts to loosen the belt until you are able to lift it a few inches off the deck's platform. Apply a thin stream of silicone lubricant to each side of the platform, then tighten the belt back to its original setting.
