Kathy Smith Lifestyles is a company that produces a line of exercise DVDs and fitness kits. One of these fitness kits is marketed as the "Walking for Fitness" kit and includes a pedometer for use in tracking your progress when walking. This pedometer is a simple, generic model, and operates in a similar fashion to many other basic models of the device.
Stride Length and Setting
Pedometers generally come with a minimum of three buttons. The first is the "mode" button, which allows you to navigate through the device's various display modes, which commonly include a count of the number of steps you have taken and the estimated distance you have traveled while wearing the pedometer.
The second button on the pedometer is the "set" button, which allows you to prepare the selected display mode for input. The third button is the "adj," or adjustment, button; this button allows you to change the settings once you have prepared a display mode. Often, one of these buttons doubles as a reset button, and may be labeled as such.
Prior to setting your pedometer you must first collect the data you plan to input into the device. You will need access to a weight scale in order to determine your current weight; the pedometer uses this data to track how many calories you have burned. A watch or wall clock also will be useful in setting the pedometer's time display. Finally, you will need to calculate your average stride length so that the device will be able to estimate how far you have traveled while walking.
Calculating your average stride length requires a measuring tape, a pair of small objects you can use as markers, and a calculator or a pen and a piece of paper. Begin by marking a starting point on the ground, then stand behind that point. Take 10 steps forward at your normal walking pace and then mark the spot where you are standing at the end of the 10th step. Measure the distance between the markers and divide the results by 10. This is your average stride length.
Once you've collected all your data, all that remains is to input the information into the pedometer. Use the "mode" button to select the clock mode, then hold the "set" button until the display begins to flash. After you've prepared the display mode, use the "adj" button to input the current time, then use the "set" button again to confirm your settings. Cycle through the remainder of the display modes and input the rest of your information in the same way.
