Candida albicans is a yeast-like fungus that normally lives in the mouth, esophagus, intestines and other areas of the body, according to Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." However, this fungus can multiply, causing a condition called candidiasis, which weakens the immune system, and can produce symptoms such as muscle pain, diarrhea, chest congestion, itching and fatigue. Some nutritionists believe that certain foods may help combat candidiasis in teens.

Nutritional therapy does not replace standard medical treatment for candidiasis. Talk to your doctor before altering your diet to treat this condition.

Vitamin C-Rich Foods

Foods rich in vitamin C may help combat the symptoms of candidiasis, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. This vitamin, known as a powerful antioxidant, may boost the immune system, helping your body to destroy uncontrolled Candida albicans. Grapefruit, oranges, mustard greens, persimmons and radishes all contain vitamin C.

Low-Carbohydrate Foods

The Candida albicans fungus thrives in sugary environments, according to Dr. Balch. Carbohydrates are converted by the body into glucose, which raises sugar levels in the bloodstream. Limiting carbohydrates--particularly simple carbohydrates, such as products containing white or refined flours--may help the body control the fungus.

Calcium-Rich Foods

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, calcium deficiency may provide an environment in which fungal infections can spread. Include calcium-rich foods such as milk, cheese, broccoli, spinach and tofu in your diet to help prevent the spread of Candida albicans.

Garlic

Garlic is an herb that has been used for centuries to ward off disease and infections, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." Considered a potent antibiotic, garlic may help halt and reverse candidiasis. Add garlic to stir-fry dishes, pasta sauces and other dishes.
