A cold sore is caused by activation of the herpes simplex 1 virus, which, according to the Nemour's Foundation, most of us pick up as children. The virus can lie dormant within the body for years, until it is triggered, resulting in the appearance of cold sores, usually on the mouth or lip area. They can, however, appear anywhere on the body. While there is no "cure" for HSV-1, you can take steps to treat the sore and limit the pain and shorten the duration of the outbreak.
Step 1
Gently wash the cold sore area with a washcloth and hot water. Toss the wash cloth in the washing machine immediately, to prevent the spread of cold sore germs.
Step 2
Apply petroleum jelly to the area surrounding the cold sore, but not directly on it. This will protect the healthy skin from the tea tree oil.
Step 3
Put two or three drops of 100 percent pure tea tree oil directly on the cold sore. Allow it to sink in for 15 to 20 minutes. A study in a 2001 issue of the "Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy" reports that tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) has antimicrobial properties, and is effective against the herpes simplex virus. Again, while the virus can't be "cured," the application of the tea tree oil can shorten the duration of the outbreak.
Step 4
Cover the treated cold sore with a layer of petroleum jelly. This will help prevent the spread of the virus, and keep bacteria from entering the cold sore.
Step 5
Repeat this process two to three times daily, until the cold sore retreats.
Tips and Warnings
- To ease the pain of the cold sore, apply a hot or cold compress every two hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also be helpful.
- If you experience increased swelling, redness, or pain after applications of the tea tree oil, discontinue use and consult your doctor, if necessary.
