According to the Mayo Clinic, scars are a natural part of the body's healing process after any type of injury or surgery. While scars may be a natural part of healing, they can be unsightly, and they often last a lifetime. However, there are some natural home remedies that can be used to help make scars disappear, according to Julia Lawless, author of The Encyclopedia of Essential Oils: The Complete Guide to The Use of Aromatic Oils In Aromatherapy, Herbalism, Health and Well-Being.

Cabreuva Essential Oil, Elemi Essential Oil, Juniper Essential Oil, Scotch Pine Essential Oil, Peppermint Essential Oil, Rosemary Essential Oil and Olive Oil

Step 1

Combine ½ tsp. cabreuva essential oil, ½ tsp. elemi essential oil, ½ tsp. juniper essential oil, ½ tsp. Scotch pine essential oil, ¼ peppermint essential oil, ¼ tsp. rosemary essential oil and ½ cup olive oil in a small, dark-colored bottle.

Step 2

Cover the bottle with a tight-fitting top or plastic wrap and rubber band. Shake the mixture for 10 to 15 seconds to thoroughly combine the ingredients.

Step 3

Pour a small amount of the mixture into a small bowl. Put a cotton pad in the bowl and allow the cotton to soak up the oil.

Step 4

Dab the cotton pad on your skin. Leave the oil that remains on the skin on for 20 minutes.

Step 5

Rinse your skin with cool, clean water. Wash with a gentle cleanser and apply your regular moisturizer if you typically use one on the area of skin being treated.

Step 6

Use this treatment twice daily--once in the morning and again in the evening. Stop using the essential oil mixture if it causes swelling, extreme redness or any other type of irritation.

Step 7

Store the mixture in a dark, dry place like a kitchen cupboard or medicine cabinet. Discard the mixture after 90 days.

Tips and Warnings

  • Therapeutic-grade essential oils are best for skin care purposes according to Ann Worwood, author of The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy. Therapeutic-grade essential oils are often more expensive than those of lower quality, but they offer the most benefit to the user.
