Alternatives to Braces for Teeth

A mouth full of metal braces for years does not excite many people. However, a mouth full of beautiful, straight teeth does. Fortunately, alternatives to braces exist in the dental market today. However, not everyone is a candidate, so it is best to discuss what options you have with your orthodontist.

Invisalign

Invisalign is exactly what it sounds like: invisible. The treatment consists of a series of invisible aligners that fit directly over your teeth. They are switched out approximately every two weeks as your bite and teeth shift. Each aligner is individually manufactured; everything is custom made. Costs for Invisalign range depending on the patient, but the national average in 2009 is around $5,000. If you have dental insurance, Invisalign will work with your carrier to help lower out-of-pocket expenses.

Veneers

Veneers are a quick alternative to years of metal braces. Veneers are attached by glue to the tooth by your orthodontist or dentist. The the entire front surface of the tooth enamel will be removed and a thin piece of tooth-shaped porcelain or plastic is glued to each tooth. It can be completed in approximately three office visits. It will generally cost between $700 to $2,000 per tooth, but the veneers will need to be replaced at some point.

Clarity braces

For those not desiring a traditional metal mouth, an alternative is available on the market: Clarity braces. They are clear, ceramic brackets that will straighten teeth, but you cannot see them. So, people will notice you, not your braces. They are, however, larger than traditional metal braces and will add a few more months to your orthodontic treatment.

SmartClip braces

SmartClip braces do not require elastic bands. They have small metal clips built into the brackets to secure the wire, so no elastic bands are needed. They require less visits to the orthodontist and shorten the length of the treatment. Some patients will only have to wear them one-third of the time they would have to wear metal braces.

Misconceptions

While these alternatives are available, they are not always the right choice. For example, Invisalign will not fix substantial dental problems. If you need serious dental work, you will most likely not be a candidate for Invisalign. You also need to be motivated to finish with Invisalign. Many with this treatment will give up switching out their aligners and thus, the money is wasted. Other alternatives such as Clarity and SmartClip braces are pricier options, so if finances are an issue, traditional orthodontia may be the best route.
