How do I Tell If Fish Oil Is Fresh?

Fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids are commonly taken for their multitude of health benefits, including reducing inflammation, reducing the risk of heart disease and improving neurological function, according "Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil." However, these benefits are not obtained by the user, and the fish oil supplements can become dangerous to take, if they are not fresh, according to "Fish Oil: The Natural Anti-inflammatory."

Step 1

Check the expiration date on the bottle of the fish oil supplements. If the expiration date has passed, discard the fish oil supplements as they are no longer fresh.

Step 2

Smell the fish oil capsules. According to "Fish Oils and Health," fresh fish oil capsules should only have a mild fish smell. They should not smell foul. If they do, the fish oil capsules are no longer fresh.

Step 3

Step 4
