East Tawas City Park is an RV-only park located on the shore of Lake Huron's Tawas Bay and in the heart of the downtown shopping district of Michigan's East Tawas. Boaters and fishermen use the park as a base camp since it's adjacent to the East Tawas Harbor marina, and the city beach running alongside the park and other nearby activities draw family vacationers as well.
Center of Activity
This RV park is not the place to go to get away from it all. With its placement downtown, the summer season of summer festivals in the city happens just beyond the park, wrapping up in the end of August with Blues by the Bay. Activity doesn't stop, however, at the end of summer. There's Oktoberfest in fall, and the annual Perchville Festival, the oldest winter festival in Michigan, having begun more than 60 years ago. Lying between the park and downtown proper is U.S. 23, the major roadway that brings vacationers to the "Sunrise Side" of Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula and the Lake Huron shoreline.
Sunrise on the Bay
If the west side of the park faces the bustle of a tourist town, the east side faces the serenity of a broad bay and the waters of Lake Huron stretching beyond the horizon. It is the primary draw for the East Tawas RV park. Sailors have their choice of taking their sailboats out to the open waters of Lake Huron or staying within the sheltered conditions of the broad bay. Tawas Bay is the site of regular sailing races during the summer. For fishermen, the bay, located between northern Lake Huron's cool waters and the warmer waters of Saginaw Bay, yields a catch of brown trout, lake trout, salmon and walleye. Fishermen look for northern pike and perch on the north shores of the bay along Tawas Point. In the winter, fishermen venture out on the ice for perch, pike and walleye.
Tawas Point
Just a short drive or bike ride away is Tawas Point, a peninsula that juts out into Lake Huron and forms the northern shore of Tawas Bay. Tawas Point State Park, with 183 acres, has its own campground for tents and RVs, hiking trails and the Tawas Point Lighthouse. Lighthouse tours are available. A 7.7-mile bike path runs from Tawas City to the lighthouse. Also on the point are more marinas and the Tawas Bay Yacht Club.
More Activities Inland
While the Lake Huron shoreline is one of the major reasons visitors set up their RVs at East Tawas City Park, hunters, hikers, canoeists and cross country skiers also use the park as base camp before heading into Huron National Forest and state forest land east and north of Tawas. The AuSable River is prime draw for canoeists as the river winds through the forest and high bluff before reaching Lake Huron at Oscoda, north of Tawas. Hunting is popular throughout the area. When winter hits, the Corsair Ski Trails offers 56 kilometers of interconnecting trails through forest and meadows.
Facilities
East Tawas City Park is open year round with 174 RV sites, each site with full hookups and cable TV. The park does not take reservations, and RV lengths cannot exceed 37 feet. A modern bath house with hot showers is on the site. The park charges daily and monthly fees, adjusted for the season, and also allows winter storage of RVs at reduced rates.
