Causes of dry and brittle hair are either genetics or environmental factors such as dry weather, overexposure to sun, salt water or chemicals in swimming pools or over-processing with chemical treatments. When your hair is dry and brittle, you may experience what appears to be hair loss, because your hair is damaged and breaking off. Luckily, most cases of dry, brittle hair can be treated at home, but if your hair is becoming thin quickly, contact a dermatologist.

Step 1

Wash your hair every other day or every third day. Washing your hair too frequently can cause dry, brittle hair, as over-washing can remove moisture and natural oils from your hair and scalp. Hair that does not have enough moisture is more prone to breakage, giving the appearance of hair loss. When you wash your hair, use a shampoo specifically formulated for dry or brittle hair.

Step 2

Moisturize your scalp and hair with a weekly deep conditioning treatment. According to MedlinePlus, adding conditioner to your hair care routine can help cure dry hair. Conditioners add moisture back to dry and brittle hair, particularly if it is not caused by a medical condition. Keeping your hair healthy and hydrated may prevent hair loss caused by breakage.

Step 3

Heat 2 tbsp. dried rosemary and 1/2 cup of olive oil in the microwave until it's just warm. Mix well and apply to your scalp before going to bed. According to Janice Cox in her book "Natural Beauty at Home," a hair oil made with rosemary can help to promote hair growth and stimulate and moisturize your scalp.

Step 4

Let your hair dry naturally whenever possible. According to MedlinePlus, overuse of blow dryers and heated styling tools, such as flat irons, can cause your hair to become dry or brittle. If you must use a heated styling appliance, spray a heat protection spray on your hair first to help prevent damage and dryness.

Things You'll Need

  • Shampoo for dry or brittle hair
  • Deep conditioning treatment
  • 2 tbsp. dried rosemary
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • Heat protection spray
