Hair removal is a common practice for both men and women. From time to time, however, you may get an ingrown hair. Ingrown hairs occur when a hair grows to a certain point, curls and grows back into the skin. In extreme cases, it may be necessary to have ingrown hairs removed by a physician, but in most cases you can remove them at home.

Step 1

Cleanse the area where the ingrown hair is located with soap and warm water. Be sure that the ingrown hair is generally visible for you to extract it. Otherwise you may have to wait until it grows out a little further.

Step 2

Pat the area dry with a clean, dry towel.

Step 3

Position yourself in front of a mirror or use a handheld mirror to inspect the ingrown hair. For ingrown hairs on your face or underneath your chin, an amplified or makeup mirror may be helpful.

Step 4

Look for the penetration site of the ingrown hair. Using sanitized tweezers, grasp the side of the hair closest to the penetration point in an attempt to free one side of the hair.

Step 5

Use the tweezers to quickly pull out the entire strand. Rub a cotton ball moistened with isopropyl alcohol over the penetration site to disinfect the area.

Tips and Warnings

  • Reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs by shaving only when necessary or waiting for hair to grow out before shaving. Exfoliating regularly removes dead skin cells and allows hair to grow through the skin. Dead skin can sometimes hinder the hair from growing by causing it to curl and grow back into the skin. Avoid wearing tight clothing as it prevents skin from "breathing" and can inhibit hair growth.
