Both men and women have upper lip hair, although in men it tends to be thicker and darker and in women it tends to be finer and lighter. The thicker type of hair is called terminal and the lighter type is called vellus. If you are a woman with thicker and darker upper lip hair, you may be self-conscious about it. Treat your lip hair from home or with the help of a professional.

Step 1

Mix up a batch of bleach to make the hair lighter. Use a bowl to mix together the activation powder and cream that comes with the bleaching kit. Apply it to your lip hair and let it stand for as long as the manufacturer recommends. Wipe it off with washcloth, wash your upper lip and pat it dry.

Step 2

Schedule an appointment with a certified aesthetician or electrologist to get the hair zapped out. Electrolysis is a procedure where the practitioner inserts a tiny needle into each hair follicle and zaps the hair root with an electrical current, causing the hair to fall out. Expect permanent results from this treatment option.

Step 3

Wash your upper lip with warm water and apply shaving cream to shave the hair off. Place a razor blade on the surface of your skin and move it down in short, smooth strokes. Wash the blade off every few strokes until you've gotten all the hair. Wash and dry your lip when you are done and inspect the area for errant hairs. Reapply shaving cream and remove accordingly.

Step 4

Invest in a home waxing kit to rip the lip hair off. Heat up the wax as long as the manufacturer recommends and apply it to the hair with the applicator stick that comes with the kit. Flatten the durable cloth strip over the hair and rip it off in one fast motion. Reapply wherever you need to remove hair. Be aware that this procedure causes a stinging sensation on your skin.

Step 5

Grip the hairs with a pair of tweezers and pull them out by the roots. Grasp one hair at a time and get close to the skin with the tips of the tweezers. Pull straight out in a steady but not fast motion. Repeat with all the hairs.

Tips and Warnings

  • When using tweezers, place the fingers of your opposite hand on your skin to make it taut. The hair you want to remove should be in between your fingers.
