Frizzy hair can have numerous causes, including hereditary factors, overuse of chemical treatments such as perms or relaxers and weather conditions such as excess humidity or heat. Hair that is prone to frizz is also usually very dry and susceptible to damage. If your hair is frizzy, take good care of your hair and keep it healthy and hydrated. By implementing an appropriate hair care regimen, you can manage and reduce the appearance of frizzy hair.

Step 1

Wash your hair twice a week using a shampoo that contains humectants such as silicone or panthenol. Humectants are compounds that help to attract moisture to your hair, reducing frizz and flyaways. According to Robert Baran and Howard I. Maibach in "Textbook of Cosmetic Dermatology," humectants help to improve the feel, look and manageability of your hair. Washing less frequently can help your hair retain moisture and decrease frizz and dryness.

Step 2

Condition your hair with a deep conditioning treatment each time you shampoo. If you have frizzy hair always use a deep conditioner after shampooing unless your hair is very fine, according to Allure magazine. After shampooing, apply the conditioner and let it penetrate for at least five to 10 minutes before rinsing out with cool water. Cool water rinsing helps decrease frizz by sealing the hair shaft.

Step 3

Gently squeeze excess water from your hair and wrap your hair in an absorbent towel after washing. Let the towel soak up any additional moisture for 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 4

Comb a leave-in conditioner through your damp hair with a wide-toothed comb. Gently smooth the conditioner through your hair, paying special attention to the ends. Frizzy hair is often more prone to split ends, so it's important to apply enough conditioner to the ends. This will also help to add weight to your hair, decreasing frizz by helping the hair shaft to lie flat.

Step 5

Let your hair air dry. Too much heat and the strong air flow from blow dryers can create frizz and cause further damage to your hair. If you must use a blow dryer, choose one that has a cold or cool shot feature. A cool shot of air at the end of blow drying can seal the hair cuticle and prevent frizz, according to Diane Irons in her book "Bargain Beauty Secrets."

Step 6

Apply an anti-frizz serum to dry hair. Rub a small amount between your palms and smooth it over your hair, starting at the roots and ending at the tips. You can also touch up your hair with anti-frizz serum at any time of the day when you need to calm frizz.

Things You'll Need

  • Shampoo containing humectants
  • Deep conditioner
  • Absorbent towel
  • Leave-in conditioner for frizzy hair
  • Wide-toothed comb
  • Anti-frizz serum
