Hair relaxers should be applied every six to eight weeks, according to "Hair and Hair Care," to avoid over-processing your hair. However, according to "The Science of Hair Care," it is typical for your hair to grow one to two inches during this time, leaving the roots of your hair untreated with the relaxer. Olive oil can be used weekly to tame your new hair growth in between relaxing treatments, according to "Hair Care: An Illustrated Dermatologic Handbook."
Step 1
Apply 2 tbsp. to 3 tbsp. of olive oil to the roots of your dry hair. Massage the olive oil into the hair and your scalp.
Step 2
Put on a shower cap to insulate your body heat, which will allow the olive oil to better infuse into your hair's follicles, according to "Hair and Hair Care."
Step 3
Allow the olive oil to remain untouched on your hair for 15 to 20 minutes, which is the amount of time required for the olive oil to relax the roots of your hair, according to "The Science of Hair Care."
Step 4
Rinse the olive oil out of your hair with cool water, which will constrict your hair's cuticles, according to "Hair and Hair Care," and lock the moisture and relaxing properties of the olive oil into your hair.
