Doxycycline hyclate is a medication in a class of drugs known as tetracycline antibiotics. According to Drugs.com, doxycycline hyclate is used for the treatment of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other fevers caused by ticks, fleas, and lice; urinary tract infections; the eye infection trachoma and some gonococcal infections in adults. Patients who are prescribed doxycycline should take their medication for the entire time for which it is prescribed as discontinuing treatment early may lead to a return of worsening of infection. There are some side effects associated with doxycycline.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
Doxycycline may lead to gastrointestinal discomfort in some users. Symptoms may include nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. According to Drugs.com, doxycycline can be taken with or without food; however, if the medicine does cause stomach upset, it may be taken with a glass of milk or after eating a meal. Adhering to a bland diet and eating small meals more frequently may also help to alleviate stomach discomfort. Those who experience severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea should consult their physician. They may be at risk for dehydration, which can be dangerous and lead to additional complications.
Photosensitivity
Photosensitivity can occur in patients taking doxycycline hyclate. Photosensitivity is an increased sensitivity to sunlight. Patients taking this medication should abstain from being outdoors in the direct sunlight and should avoid the use of tanning beds and sunlamps. The use of protective clothing and sunblock can help lessen the risk of developing sunburn while taking this medication.
Rash
Some patients taking doxycycline hyclate may develop a rash. This rash may or may not cause itching and discomfort. A mild rash may be relieved by an over-the-counter cream that contains cortisol or a colloidal oatmeal bath, as recommended by a physician. A rash that becomes severe, or is accompanied by hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the tongue or throat may be a sign of a serious allergic reaction and should be brought to the attention of a physician immediately.
