Stress, medications, poor nutrition and underlying medical conditions can all cause hair loss. Often, there's nothing that can be done to prevent balding. But sometimes hair loss can be prevented. And the ways to do that don't have to be all that completed. Natural ways to prevent balding involve improving your overall health, along with your hair health.
Stimulate Your Body
Physical activity increases your heart rate and improves blood circulation throughout your body, according to the American Heart Association. Increased blood flow to your scalp can stimulate your hair follicles. Stimulated hair follicles receive more oxygen and nutrients, which encourage hair growth, according to the natural healing website Holistic Online. Set a goal of either 30 minutes of moderately brisk exercise or 15 minutes of vigorous exercise. Choose an activity or two that interest you to prevent boredom. Examples of endurance exercises include walking, skiing, rowing, dancing, stair climbing, indoor and outdoor bicycling and jogging.
Get Enough Protein
Your hair is composed mainly of protein. A protein-deficient diet can be a leading cause of hair loss, according to the Mayo Clinic. Use shampoos, conditioners, styling gels and oil treatments that contain soy protein as the active ingredient.
Drink protein shakes or beverages. Or get your protein from animal and plant sources. Complete sources of protein include dairy and eggs, beef, lamb, pork, veal, chicken and fish, according to the National Institutes of Health. Soybeans are the only plant-based food classified as a complete protein. Soybean products include tofu, tempeh, meatless cutlets and burgers, soy milk, soy cheese and soy ice cream. You can combine protein sources such as beans and brown rice to obtain a complete protein. Whole grains, nuts and seeds also contain protein.
Lower Your Risk of Damaged Hair
Treating your hair gently can prevent damage, a precursor to hair loss, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Stop harsh and frequent brushing. Stop twisting and pulling your hair. Use gentle, free-flowing hairstyles instead of braids, tight buns or ponytails. Untangle wet hair with a wide-toothed comb. Do not vigorously towel-dry your hair. Wrap the towel around your wet hair and allow it to absorb the moisture. Reduce your heat drying time. Allow your hair to dry naturally, the Mayo Clinic advises. Do not sun-dry your hair. Replace harsh styling products that contain damaging chemicals with more natural ones.
