When you're suffering from diabetes, but you're in between meals, you don't have the option of just pulling up to the drive-through window and ordering anything you want. People with diabetes have to be careful about watching blood-sugar levels, and that means watching the snacks you eat on a daily basis. A few simple, healthy snack ideas can help you feel satisfied throughout the day without putting your health at risk.

Veggie Snack Pack

When you're on the go and in the mood for a cool treat, a variety of veggies with a simple dip can do the trick for your appetite, without providing too many carbs or sugars that can send your blood sugar spiking. Cut up three or four of your favorite types of vegetables--tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, zucchini, carrots, you name it--and put them in a plastic sandwich bag. Fill a small plastic container with low fat yogurt dip or low fat dressing for a simple dip option. For a whole other serving of vegetables, try dipping your veggies in a serving of salsa.

Cheese and Crackers

One of the keys to managing your diabetes is making sure you're getting a balance of nutrition. A simple and delicious way to get a healthy portion of protein and carbohydrates is with a small serving of cheese and crackers. To make it healthy, slice up some skim milk cheese, or pack along a stick of mozzarella cheese. Opt for crackers that contain whole grains, which will help you feel more full and prevent a spike in your blood sugar.

Fruit and Cottage Cheese

When you need a sweet snack, the smartest solution isn't to head for the candy aisle, it's to grab a natural form of sugar--fruit. A handful of grapes, an apple or a peach will help satisfy your sweet tooth while keeping your diabetes in check. Better yet, pair your serving of fruit with a bit of cottage cheese to help balance out your snack and provide the energy you need to get you through the day.

Homemade Popcorn

You may think you have to steer clear from this fluffy snack, but when you make it yourself you can control the nutritional values. Use an air popper to make several servings of popcorn, or even grab a medium-sized pot out of the kitchen. Cover the bottom of the pot with 1 tbsp. of olive oil and one layer of popcorn kernels. Put a lid on the pot and shake it regularly over medium to high heat until most of the kernels are popped. Use butter spray with a dash of salt, or try garlic salt or grated parmesan cheese for a fun snack that's also healthy.
