Tennis on a grass court, which is often referred to as lawn tennis, is played using the rules that are set by the International Tennis Federation. A singles game involves two players, and a doubles game is between teams of two players. A tennis match is played in sets. The winner of a women's match is the first player to win two sets, and that of a men's match is the first player to win either two or three sets.
Serving
Toss a coin to determine which player serves first. If you win the toss, you can choose an end of the court or choose to begin the game by serving. If you choose to take an end of the court, your opponent can choose to serve or receive. If you choose to serve, you serve for the duration of the game, starting from the right side of the court and changing sides after each point. For a serve to be legal, it must land in the service box on your opponent's side of the net, and you must serve with your feet behind the baseline. Service changes after each game.
Scoring Points
A set is made up of games, and you must win at least four points to win a game. You must also beat your opponent by at least two clear points to win a game. When scoring a game, consecutive numbers are not used; this avoids confusion. Zero points is known as "love." The first three points are called as "15, 30 and 40," respectively. If a player wins a point after 40, he wins the game. However, if both players are at 40, the score is called deuce. If the game reaches this point, the first player to win two points consecutively wins.
You win a set by winning at least six games with at least a two game advantage over your opponent. You win a match by winning the required number of sets, usually two in a women's game and three in a men's game. In women's doubles and mixed doubles games, the winner is usually the first team to win two sets, and in men's doubles, it is usually the first team to win three sets.
Tiebreaks
A tiebreak may be used to determine the winner of a set if the score reaches six games all. A tiebreak is played to seven points, and to win, you must be two points clear of your opponent. Tiebreaks are not always played in the final set of a tennis match. Whether a tiebreak is used at this time depends on the rules for the tournament. The organizer will decide if a tiebreak can be used in the final set or if the final set should continue until you are two games clear of your opponent.
