LED, or light emitting diode, therapy works by stimulating the skin's own natural production of elastin and collagen. It uses a mix of infrared, blue, amber and red lights, which penetrate the surface of the skin. It is used as an anti-aging therapy and in pain relief.

Nonsurgical Procedure

This is a noninvasive, painless, facial procedure that can be done in a local salon, or safely at home, with a smaller hand-held version of the LED light. There is some question as to the effectiveness of the home-use devices. There are no known side effects, even for those with sensitive skin.

Anti-aging

Some research suggests LED therapy may be helpful for anti-aging, acne, rosacea and some other skin pigmentation disorders. It is also used to help sun-damaged skin regain a more youthful look. Some devices claim to be particularly effective for acne treatment.

Pain Relief

LED light is also used successfully for pain relief in patients with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, sports injuries, macular degeneration and wound healing. It does not ease headaches or post-workout muscle pain.
