Chicago has a population of about 2.8 million people, with close to 10 million people living in the Chicagoland area, including the suburbs. It is also a family friendly city, offering plenty of attractions and things to do for parents and toddlers alike. Choose from one of many activities to share time with your child with healthy aspects as well.

Parks

Chicago has plenty of public parks to play in with your toddler. Millennium Park downtown is a popular place to go. During summer months, kids can splash in the fountains and play with the other kids there. Grant Park is a huge park in the downtown area with plenty of open space to run and play. A number of smaller parks throughout the city and suburbs also have playgrounds; review the Chicago Traveler Parks and Gardens for additional options. A day at the park with your toddler is a great way to get fresh air and exercise through play. Do not forget to put sunscreen on both of you.

Museums

Museums are a great way to spend time with your kids and provide an educational experience as well, which promotes mental health and development. Chicago is home to many museums, almost all of which are kid-friendly. Park at the Museum Campus downtown to gain access to the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium. The Museum of Science and Industry is about 5 1/2 miles south of the Museum Campus on Lake Shore Drive. Each one costs money and provides a full day's worth of exhibits, so you might want to space out your visits. There is also a Children's Museum at Navy Pier in downtown Chicago.

Libraries

Like museums, libraries provides kids with an opportunity to learn about whatever they are interested in. Most libraries in Chicago have a separate kids section, where you can take your toddler to read books and play. There are also regularly scheduled kids activities like story time or art classes at many libraries throughout the city and suburbs.

Beaches

Although Chicago is not on either coast, it is still home to a number of beaches, mostly along Lake Michigan. A day at the beach offers plenty of fun and healthy activities for your toddler, including running, swimming and building sand castles. Be sure to keep a constant eye on your child, especially near the water. Wear sunscreen as well. Oak Street Beach downtown is the largest and most popular beach in Chicago during the summer. There are plenty of places to eat and catch a break from the hot sun throughout the say as well. Rainbow Beach, Ohio Street Beach, Oakwood/41st Street Beach and North Avenue Beach are other public beaches that offer swimming.

Transportation

Many toddlers are fascinated with transportation, especially the different vehicles and modes of transportation available. Chicago has an easy to use public transportation system that allows you to get almost anywhere in the city without having to drive and park. Kids will love taking the "L," which is Chicago's popular elevated train system. It is also a great way to see the city for only a few dollars, and teach your kids about the history of Chicago and the L train system. Double-decker bus rides and boat tours are also available daily, and provide a great educational and fun experience for you and your kids.
