The Ocuvite PreserVision AREDS formula vitamin is a vitamin supplement aimed at the preservation of eye health and vision. The antioxidant rich formula contains vitamins A, C, and E as well as the minerals zinc and copper. The recommended intake is four tablets per day for those with moderate to advanced age-related macular degeneration. A 10 year long study performed by the National Eye Institute's Age-Related Eye Disease Study, or AREDS, found that taking high-doses of antioxidants and zinc, such as those found in the Ocuvite PreserVision AREDS formula vitamin, can significantly reduce your risk of developing advanced AMD.
Consult with your physician before embarking on any alternative health modality, to ensure that it is right for your condition.
Vitamin A
In a four tablet daily dose, the Ocuvite PreserVision AREDS supplement contains 28,640 IU of vitamin A in the form of beta carotene. This is approximately 573% of the recommended daily vitamin A intake dosage. Vitamin A is important for vision and eye health, growth, immune system function, wound healing, and cancer prevention. The upper intake level for vitamin A, to avoid toxicity symptoms, in adults over the age of 19 is 25,000 IU per day. While there is no set upper intake level for beta carotene be sure to discuss your intake with your doctor to avoid potential health problems.
Vitamin C
The recommended four tablet daily dose of Ocuvite PreserVision AREDS provides approximately 452 mg of vitamin C. The current RDA for vitamin C is 90 mg per day for men over 19 and 75 mg per day for women over 19, providing over five times the RDA for vitamin C. Vitamin C helps to prevent cataracts, macular degeneration, protect from some cancers, heart disease and can help with treatment of the common cold. It is important to note that intakes greater then 2,000 mg per day can cause loose stools, gas, diarrhea and bloating and may also interfere with absorption of other nutrients.
Vitamin E
A four tablet daily dose of Ocuvite PreserVision AREDS also provides approximately 400 IU of vitamin E. The RDA for vitamin E is set at 15 mg which is equal to 33 IU of dl-alpha-tocopherol per day for adults over the age of 19. Dl-alpha-tocopherol is the form of vitamin E contained in PreserVision supplements. Vitamin E helps to protect against heart disease, cancers, delay cataracts, aid in wound healing, and help the immune system. There have been no known toxic effects found from large doses of vitamin E; however, the tolerable upper intake level is set at 1,200 IU dl-alpha-tocopherol vitamin E per day.
