Privacy on the computer is essential for many parents. The easiest way to ensure that your children will not get into your private files is to create a specific user account on your computer that you can password-protect and also password-protect specific files as a backup. For children, create separate user accounts without access to important or private files.

Create a User Profile

Step 1

Click "Start" and then "Control Panel" and then "User Accounts".

Step 2

Click "Create a New Account" and name the account for either your children or yourself. You should create at least two separate accounts, one for the children and another for adults with private files.

Step 3

Click on "Limited" for the children's account and "Computer administrator" for the adult account. Choose "Create Account".

Password-Protect a User Account

Step 1

Click "Start" and then "Control Panel" and then "User Accounts".

Step 2

Click "User Account" and then choose the account to protect.

Step 3

Click "Create a Password" and type in the password twice.

Password-Protect Folders

Step 1

Create a compressed folder by right-clicking inside a window; choose "New" and then "Compressed zipped".

Step 2

Type a name for the folder and press Enter.

Step 3

Click and drag the folders that you want to make private. When you drop the file into the new folder, click "Move Here".

Step 4

Click "File" and "Add a Password" to password-protect the folder.
