Reading with your child is one of the best ways to teach him to enjoy reading. Children who are read to as young children are more likely to do well in school, reports Healthy Children. Reading out loud to your child can be an enjoyable experience for you and your child as you read about far away places and captivating characters. Collect two or three books and settle into a comfortable spot to spend quality time reading to your child.

Step 1

Select a story to read. Include your child in the process so she is engaged with the story and willing to listen.

Step 2

Show your child the book and tell him what the title of the story is. Point out some details in the picture on the cover of the book to help set the stage for what your child will hear.

Step 3

Read the words on each page slowly so your child can understand what the story is about. Run your finger under each word so your child will begin to realize that the words are connected to the pictures.

Step 4

Ask your child questions as you read. Encourage her to make predictions about what will happen next or ask her questions about the plot to ensure that she understands what is happening in the story.

Step 5

Use entertaining voices and characters. Alter your voice for each character in the story or use a variety of animal noises or sound effects to add depth to the book you are reading.

Tips and Warnings

  • Create a special reading spot in your home, suggests Kids Health, so your child has a special place to go to enjoy a story with you. Read a variety of different books to your child so you can discover what her interests and passions are. Set aside a few minutes each day to spend reading to your child, recommends Healthy Children. Take your child to the public library and allow her to choose stories that interest her. Read a few to her at the library and check out a few to take home to enjoy later. Reading out loud from books can be just as enjoyable and educational when your child reads to you. Allow your child to pick and book to read to you every once in a while.
  • Do not force your child to listen to an entire story if he is not engaged. Choose a new book and move on so he does not begin to associate reading with being forced to do something he does not want to do.
