Cambria sits on California's central coast, next to the ocean, with miles of beaches defining the community. The village sits on Pacific Coast Highway, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, within 10 miles of Hearst Castle. The historic architecture, ocean activities and hiking adventures draw outdoor enthusiasts to town. The areas moderate temperature allows for year round camping.
Ocean Adventures
Pack your rod and reel and surf fish from the beaches around Cambria or hop on a charter boat and deep-sea fish in this area. You'll catch rock cod, ling cod, California sheephead, sole and sand dabs. Whale watching is also popular off the coast; visitors on the 2 ½ hour tours keep an eye out for Pacific Gray Whales. Park your RV at Morro Strand RV Park, about 15 miles south of Cambria. Full hookups are available, as well as restrooms, showers, laundry, cable TV and Internet.
Walking at the Castle
Lace up your tennis shoes and get ready to tour Hearst Castle, the palatial estate once owned by newspaperman William Randolph Hearst. It was donated to the state of California in 1957. You'll walk through the castle building, 18-room guesthouse, past the Neptune and Roman pools and through the gardens with their marble sculptures and flowers. When it's time to spend the night, check-in at the Wine Country RV Resort, 20 miles east of Cambria, in Paso Robles. There are 166 full hookups, with 20 to 50 amp service, pull-throughs, restrooms, showers, laundry and free Internet.
Beach Adventures
If you prefer to walk or jog on the beach, the Cambria area has miles of beaches, a pier and tide pools to explore. For overnight accommodations, the Morro Dunes RV Park is less than 15 miles south of Cambria, on a nine-mile stretch of Atascadero Beach. Choose from 170 camp sites with 50 and 30 amp service that includes electricity and water and cable TV.
Hiking
Head to San Simeon State Park and hike the 3.5-mile round-trip San Simeon Creek Trail. You'll view coastline and pine forests on this trail with interpretive displays and a boardwalk that crosses a wetland. The trail circles the park's San Simeon Creek and Washburn campgrounds where you can park your RV overnight. The state park is two miles north of Cambria and offers 115 campsites for RVs. Maximum length is 35 feet. Campsites have a fire ring and picnic table, water spigots throughout the campground and restrooms with coin-operated showers as well.
Campground Considerations
The private campgrounds in the area offer amenities that include restrooms with showers to cable TV and Internet. State parks offer minimal services. Both some of the private campgrounds, as well as the state campground in this area, are located on the beach.
