With the Bowflex Xtreme Home Gyms, you can do a full-body strength workout in the privacy of your home. The SE and the 2 SE have more similarities than differences. They have the same footprint, 58 inches by 49 inches; they offer up to 210 pounds of resistance with the option to expand to 410 pounds; and both use the Bowflex Power Rod technology. The biggest differences between the two models lie in the number of exercises you can do and the type of pulley system the machine has.
Step 1
Compare the exercises you can do on each machine; you'll find subtle differences. If you look at a picture of the Xtreme SE and the Xtreme 2 SE, they look almost identical. The Xtreme 2 SE does have some additional features, such as an extra position on the lower pulley/squat station, that allow you to do a handful of extra exercises. According to the Bowflex website, you can do more than 65 exercises on the Xtreme SE and more than 70 exercises on the Xtreme 2 SE. Some of the additional exercises are the decline and incline chest fly, "rope" style push-downs and the single calf raise.
Step 2
Consider the extra convenience of the Xtreme 2 SE model's no-change cable pulley system. This design allows you to change exercises, from lat pull-downs to squats, without changing cables. Your workout moves more quickly and more smoothly. The Xtreme SE doesn't have this advanced design.
Step 3
Consider your budget. The Xtreme 2 SE is priced about $300 more than the Xtreme SE. The higher cost is mostly due to the advanced cable pulley design. As of August 2010, the SE cost $1,300, and the Xtreme 2 SE $1,600.
