A CPAP machine treats people suffering from sleep apnea. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the CPAP machine represents the most effective treatment option. Sleep apnea blocks the airways while a person sleeps leading to breathing difficulties and loud snoring. The CPAP machine works by using mild air pressure to prevent your airways from collapsing and becoming blocked. To maintain your CPAP machine and minimize the risk of bacterial infection, it is important to keep its components clean.

Step 1

Unplug the CPAP machine.

Step 2

Wash your hands.

Step 3

Detach the hose attached to the mask and the CPAP machine's body. CPAP machines with a humidifier have an additional hose. Detach this hose from the machine's body and the humidifier.

Step 4

Soak the CPAP hoses in warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent for a few minutes. Shake the hoses in the water to release any dirt.

Step 5

Rinse the hoses under running tap water.

Step 6

Hang the hoses to air-dry away from direct sunlight for at least 30 minutes.

Step 7

Attach the hoses back to the CPAP machine only when they are completely dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • Clean the hoses of a CPAP machine with a humidifier weekly. Clean the hose of a CPAP machine without a humidifier monthly.
  • Do not use any dish detergents containing perfumes, moisturizers or dyes.
