Chicago is a beautiful city, but weather can tend to keep visitors and residents indoors for days at a time. If you want to find a way to remain active on stormy or rainy days, the Windy City has plenty of options. Remember to keep an umbrella at your side though, because you might have to walk outside momentarily in order to get inside.

Comedy Clubs

One of the healthiest things you can do for your overall well-being is laugh. Chicago is the home of improvisational comedy, with the original Second City still showcasing the finest young comedic talent in America. If you prefer stand-up comedy to sketch comedy, go to Zanies in Old Town for the most popular touring comedians.

Cafes

Chicago is always opening up new restaurants of all types. If you're looking for a relaxing way to spend a few hours waiting out the rain, go to one of Chicago's many restaurants or cafes which offer healthy food. The Chicago Diner in Boystown has vegan cuisine, and the Earwax Cafe in Wicker Park is famous for vegetarian dishes.

Museum Campus

Just south of the Loop, Chicago's Museum Campus has three different indoor facilities which offer your legs and brain hours of exercise. The Adler Planetarium has exhibits for anyone interested in the universe. The Field Museum is the largest building on the campus, and is dedicated to educating visitors on natural history. The Shedd Aquarium has thousands of live animals on display, from beluga whales to seahorses.

Fitness Centers

Fitness centers are located throughout the city, and visitors can often experience one free workout session. In addition to weights and machines, many fitness centers have indoor pools, climbing rock walls, sauna rooms and racquetball courts. Just remember to bring an extra pair of dry shoes so your wet ones from outside don't cause any slippage in the gym.

Theatre

A strong thespian scene exists in Chicago, and many actors use the independent theater opportunities in the Windy City to build up a strong resume before moving to New York or Los Angeles. The theaters with the highest renown are the Goodman and Steppenwolf. But small spaces throughout the city feature amateur shows at lower prices.
