Overview

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a potentially life-saving technique. It can be used to help maintain and restore circulation in someone that has recently suffered a heart attack. Even if you do not feel completely confident in your abilities, if you are the only person that is available to help, it is far better to do something rather than doing nothing. It is also important to call emergency medical services as soon as possible or to get someone else to call 911.

Step 1

Determine if the person is unconscious. If she appears to be unconscious, gently shake her shoulder and ask, "Are you OK?"

Step 2

If the person is unconscious, place the patient on his back on a firm surface.

Step 3

Get into position by kneeling down next to the person's head and shoulders.

Step 4

Open the patient's airway. To do this, place one hand on her forehead and tilt the head back while using your other hand to tilt her chin forward.
