The chicken soup diet and the cabbage soup diet are probably two of the best known fad diets around. Their main appeal is based on the simple fact that you can lose a significant amount of weight on them, even if you only try the diets for a week, according to FoodWatch. The other attractive point of a soup diet is that it's easy to do. You don't need to count calories or follow complicated menus. Simply eat soup for every meal and the weight will come off.
Step 1
Make a large batch of basic broth. You can do this using broth cubes or canned soup, or you can make your own by boiling chopped vegetables of your choice in water. Store the broth in the refrigerator. You'll be adding different extras to this basic broth for your meals.
Step 2
Add your choice of vegetables and meat to the broth every day. You can do fish and onions one day and chicken and green peas the next. Skip starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn. Add enough so each cup of broth you serve contains a couple ounces of meat and about half a cup of vegetables.
Step 3
Have a light breakfast of whole grains and fruits. Keep the portions small and fill out on liquids, such as tea or coffee. Don't use sugar or cream. Different versions of the soup diet prohibit all carbohydrates and instead suggest eating steamed veggies or fresh fruit throughout the day.
Step 4
Eat a large bowl of soup for dinner. If you want to lose weight faster, have soup for both lunch and dinner. If you're still hungry after a bowl, eat more but skip the meat. The liquid will fill you up and help you control hunger cravings so you don't feel like snacking on something else.
