According to Drs. Gilbert Upchurch and Timothy Schaub of the University of Michigan Health System in the April 2006 edition of the "American Family Physician" journal, risk factors linked to the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm include hypertension, tobacco use, family history of the condition, and being male. Furthermore, they say ultrasound testing represents a cost-effective screening method for these high risk patients since typical physical exams cannot detect this condition. Left undetected, an aortic aneurysm can cause the aorta to swell and burst leading to death.

Step 1

Fast eight to 12 hours before your scheduled abdominal ultrasound screening procedure. MayoClinic.com reports that fasting is necessary, since liquids and foods impair the ultrasound technician's ability to reliably view your aorta. Check with your doctor to find out if you can drink any liquids and if you can take medications before your procedure.

Step 2

Wear comfortable clothing to your ultrasound test. Note that you may be asked to change into a hospital dressing gown.

Step 3

Arrive to your scheduled appointment on time and bring any related paperwork and necessary identification with you.

Step 4

Inform your doctor if you have had a barium enema or upper gastrointestinal tests within two days of your abdominal ultrasound. The barium used in those other procedures may still be in your system and could potentially confound results of your ultrasound test, according to RadiologyInfo.org.
