How to Remove Scratches From Eye Glass Lenses

Eyeglasses can be expensive and are often not fully covered by vision insurance, according to "Ophthalmic Lenses & Dispensing." Therefore, when you find that your eyeglass lenses have become scratched, you are likely not eager to have the lenses replaced. In many cases, if the scratches are minor, they can be successfully and inexpensively repaired at home, according to "Understanding Lens Surfacing."

Step 1

Apply toothpaste to the scratches on the lenses. Use a microfiber cloth to rub the toothpaste in a gentle circular motion on the lenses. According to "Spectacle Lenses: Theory and Practice," this will remove the coating of the lenses and allow you to fill the scratches.

Step 2

Rinse the toothpaste off of your eyeglass lenses. Gently dry the lenses with a towel.

Step 3

Apply a small amount of jeweler's rouge, which can be purchased from a jewelry store, to the scratches. Rub the jeweler's rouge into the scratches with a clean microfiber cloth. According to "Ophthalmic Lenses & Dispensing," this will fill in the scratch.

Step 4

Spray CD repair solution, which can be purchased at an office supply store, to the scratches. Rub the repair solution in a circular motion into the scratch with a clean microfiber cloth. According to "Understanding Lens Surfacing," this will polish the surface of the lenses.
