A big hitter on a golf course will get noticed. Other players tend to get awed by a player who can drive the ball more than 300 yards. However, while the big hitter may get the raised eyebrows, the golfer who can hit the ball straight will usually put the lower number on the scorecard and will almost always play much more consistently. Golfers who understand the fundamentals of the game and how to execute them have a good chance of hitting the ball straight.

Step 1

Align yourself correctly when you address the ball. In order to hit the ball straight, you have to be lined up straight with the target. If you are a right-handed golfer, make sure your left shoulder is facing the flag stick or the part of the fairway you want the ball to go. Your left foot needs to be directly underneath your left shoulder. Your feet should be about shoulder-width apart. Play the ball about one ball width closer to your front foot that than your back foot. You should be able to hit the ball straight with this setup.

Step 2

Take a firm grip on your club if you want to hit the ball straight. If you take a grip that is too tight, you will be limited in your ability to rotate your shoulders. If your grip is too loose, the club head will not remain steady on impact. Grip the club at about a "six" on a scale of one to 10. That's the same as a firm business handshake.

Step 3

Rotate your hips to the rear to get your backswing started. Good golfers know that the golf swing involves a lot more than your shoulders, arms and hands. You must get your full body involved. By rotating your hips, your legs, glutes, back, core muscles and chest will play key roles in your swing. This will help you hit the ball down the middle.

Step 4

Keep your focus on the rear and center portion of the ball as you begin your downswing. New golfers and high handicappers tend to think about all the things they have to do in order to to hit the ball straight and they take their mind off the basic fundamentals. You can't hit the ball squarely if you aren't focused on your target. Stay focused on the ball.

Step 5

Keep your left side firm as you make contact with the ball. You want to attack by going to and through the ball. If you pull your left side through the ball too quickly, your shot is likely to veer off course. You don't need to do anything but go straight through the ball in order to keep it on course.
