With age, many people develop pronounced lines that extend downward from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Since smiling and other facial expressions contribute to their development, these folds are frequently called smiling lines. Dermatologists, however, call them nasal-labial folds.

According to SmartSkinCare.com, hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can help soften nasal-labial folds when injected underneath the problem area. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in human skin, which makes these dermal fillers non-toxic and bio-compatible. They don't require allergy tests and generate few side effects. Additionally, hyaluronic acid breaks down when it comes in contact with the enzyme hyaluronidase. Therefore, if you do experience an adverse reaction or simply don't like the results, the enzyme can be injected in the treatment area and the filler will dissolve.

Step 1

Familiarize yourself with the side effects associated with hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are well-tolerated by most people, explains Dr Brandith Irwin of the Madison Skin and Laser Center. However, side effects can occur. Common side effects include redness, swelling, bruising or tenderness at the injection site, which usually subside within seven days. On rare occasions, allergic reactions can develop, which manifest as red, thickened bumps at the injection site. These can last for several weeks or months. Also, if you are pregnant or nursing, you should postpone treatment with a hyaluronic acid filler, as the effects of the treatment on women in these conditions is not known.

Step 2

Choose an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon or aesthetic specialist to perform your procedure. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you find a doctor who has extensive experience with hyaluronic acid-based fillers. Ask the doctor how long he has been using the filler and how many patients he has treated. Also, ask to see before-and-after photos of patients he has treated with a hyaluronic acid-based filler.

Step 3

Avoid aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, for one week prior to your procedure. Dr. Irwin advises that you minimize the potential of excess bruising and bleeding at the injection site by avoiding these painkillers. Do not take these medications for two to three days following your procedure, as well.

Step 4

Expect mild to moderate discomfort during your treatment. Ask your doctor to apply a topical anesthetic if you are particularly pain-sensitive. The injection procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete, notes SkinCarePhysicians.com.

Step 5

Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours following your injection to reduce the likelihood of prolonged bruising and swelling, says Dr. Irwin.

Step 6

Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling and discomfort after your procedure. Periodically ice the injection site for 15 to 20 minutes to minimize pain, advises SkinCarePhysicians.com.

Step 7

Schedule a touch-up procedure. The duration of the results generated from hyaluronic acid-based fillers vary from person to person. However, most last from three to nine months, explains DermNet. Undergo maintenance injections as needed.
