How to Use Hot Curlers

When used at home, hot curlers provide a way for people to style their hair without having to visit a hair stylist. The curlers come in a variety of sizes and styles for use on long or short hair.

Step 1

Choose the hot curler set that will help you achieve the look you want. Large curlers are useful for longer hair or to achieve a soft, full look on shorter hair. Flexible or spiral curlers might be the choice for a wild or messy effect..

Step 2

Plug in the curlers and allow time for them to get hot. Some curlers heat up quickly for on-the-go styling; others can take up to 15 minutes before they're hot enough for effective styling.

Step 3

Comb or brush out hair that is dry. Dry hair is better for curling. Some people prefer to add styling mousse or hairspray to help hold the style longer.

Step 4

Section the hair with a comb. The amount of hair used should be in proportion to the size of the hot curler.

Step 5

Wrap your hair around the curler. Start at the end of the hair and roll right up to your scalp. The choice to roll forward or backward depends on the style you're going for.

Step 6

Secure the curler in place with the clip provided. Leave it in for five to 15 minutes or until the curler has cooled.

Step 7

Remove the clip and unroll the hair from the curler. Some prefer to brush and smooth after curling; others may use their fingers to fluff or toss hair.
